One of the most iconic actresses that headlined the golden era of Bollywood, Madhubala is till date remembered by her admirers. Known for her beauty and acting prowess, she made a mark for herself in the entertainment industry for her portrayal of strong female characters. While she established herself as an incredible talent in her short career, the actress passed away in February 1969 at the tender age of 36. She breathed her last after suffering a heart attack the night before, in the presence of her family members and husband Kishore Kumar.

Termed as the ‘Venus of Indian Cinema,’ the actress was born with a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a hole in her heart, a similar heart condition to actress Bipasha Basu’s daughter, Devi. For the unversed, VSD is a congenital heart defect which occurs when there is an abnormal hole in the wall which separates the two lower chambers of the heart. It is a common heart defect that is present from birth. Recalling her daughter’s condition, Bipasha in an interaction with Neha Dhupia had revealed that Devi had two holes in her heart and had to undergo surgery when she was three-months old. She had said, “For a new mother, when you get to know that... I got to know on the third day of me having a baby that our baby is born with two holes in her heart. Coming back to Madhubala, she made her debut at the age of 9 with the movie Basant in 1942. She solidified her name as one of the most iconic actresses in Hindi cinema with Dilip Kumar and Prithviraj Kapoor starrer Mughal-e-Azam. She appeared in more than 70 films and was even considered as the Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood. Her condition went unnoticed until she was working on a movie in 1954. As time progressed her health started deteriorating.
